Logo Design for the Non-Designer [FREE Logo Design Checklist]

How do you successfully hire someone to do something that isn’t within your zone of genius? Especially when you have no idea what to look for?

My boyfriend and I recently experienced this when we hired contractors for a home renovation project. We knew enough to know that we needed help. However, once we started looking at contractor portfolios, we realized that we knew what we thought looked nice, but we had NO idea who was more trustworthy or proficient from a technical perspective.

What’s more, when we finally hired a contractor and he would ask me to come in and approve the work for the day…I had no idea what to say! “I see that…you made progress? There is drywall up now?” …how was I supposed to give my wholehearted approval if I didn’t have a clue what I was looking at?

I tried the “grin and nod” approach and said it looked good (because it did, from what I could tell) — only to discover later on in the process that something had actually been mismeasured. One misunderstanding/oversight threw the whole project off.

That error, neither entirely my fault nor the contractor’s fault, ended up costing us time, money, and energy to fix.

And it got me thinking.

Wouldn’t it be nice if the professionals/experts of the world empowered you with the ability to make informed decisions about their work?

Wouldn’t it be nice to go into a working relationship knowing the signs of a job well done, without having to guess and “fake it til you make it”?

Wouldn’t it feel so much better to go into a contract with a service provider feeling confident that you made a solid choice, and that your approval could be given based on a true understanding of the hallmarks of quality work?
